DES MOINES, Iowa— Despite a 15-kill night from junior Emily Wandersee, the Aces (13-15, 6-10 MVC) fell to Drake (20-10, 8-7 MVC) by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25).
Wandersee led the Aces offensively after hitting .382 in the match while also posting three blocks. Sophomore Brooke Maher collected 13 kills and 10 digs. Libero Julie Sylvester tabbed 30 digs while setter Ellen Sawin had 46 assists at the end of the night.
The Aces jumped out 2-0 to start the night during the first set with back-to-back kills from Ginta Gabruseva and Maher. UE continued to hold the lead until Drake tied the set at 4. The Bulldogs held the lead from there, getting as high as a seven-point advantage, and took the first set 25-22.
Drake got off to a fast 6-1 lead in the next outing with the help of two service aces and back-to-back kills. Drake held the lead until two kills from Jessica Knackmuhs plus one from Wandersee put the Aces ahead 12-10 going into a Drake timeout. After the Bulldogs gained their composure to retake the lead, the Aces went on a 7-0 scoring spree that consisted of five kills from multiple players and an ace from April Lubrecht to take the 21-18 advantage, and eventually the set at 25-23.
A kill from Kaisi Nixon and a block from Wandersee and Maher put UE up 2-0 in the third set. Drake came back to tie it at 4 and 6 before going on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Aces didn’t give up, and the team fought a four-point deficit to tie the game at 21. However, three-straight points from the Bulldogs helped the home team take the 25-23 win.
The fourth set started as a battle from the beginning after the Aces went up 3-1. The Bulldogs then tied it at three, and the fight then started. The teams continued to exchange points and tied the score 15 times during the outing. Tangled at 19, Drake put up a 3-0 run that would give them the match at 25-21.
The Aces will continue the weekend at Creighton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Earlier in the season, UE defeated the Bluejays in Evansville for Swan’s first win over the team.
