After rebounding in the second set to tie the match at 1-1, the University of Evansville volleyball team let the next two sets slip away, as the Aces (13-13, 6-8 MVC) fell to Missouri State (18-7, 11-2 MVC) by a score of 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25).

“It’s just frustrating,” said Evansville head coach Mike Swan. “We rebounded in the second to look impressive, let the third slip away and just give up in the fourth. We need to find ways to beat good teams without unforced errors.”

Senior Ginta Gabruseva posted a team-high 14 kills while junior Emily Wandersee collected 13 kills and hit .444 for the match. Junior Julie Sylvester tabbed 28 digs followed by sophomore Brooke Maher with 15. Sophomore Ellen Sawin notched a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs while senior Rachel Robinson had a team-high five block assists.

In the first set, UE started with a 3-1 lead after kills from Gabruseva and Wandersee. MSU then came up and tied the contest at 3, 6 and 7 before three-straight kills set the visitors up with a 12-8 advantage. The Bears would hold the lead and end the 25-15 win with a 6-0 point cap.

MSU came out roaring to a quick 3-0 lead over the Aces in the second before kills from Gabruseva and Maher tied the match at 3. The teams traded points until a MSU service error put UE up 13-12. With Gabruseva hitting .417, Wandersee with .429 and the team posting only one error in the set, the Aces took the second 25-19.

UE once again started the third with a 3-1 advantage before the Bears tied it at 3. The teams exchanged points and leads until UE mistakes put MSU up 13-11. The Aces used a 4-0 scoring rally with two kills from freshman Jessica Knackmuhs to tie it at 17, but it wouldn’t be enough with MSU gaining a 25-22 victory.

The fourth set started as a repeat of the second with the visitors up 3-0 and UE tying it at 3 after capitalizing on MSU errors. With the score at 10-8 in favor of the Bears, a 7-0 run by MSU helped the team seal the match at 25-17.

The Aces return to action on Saturday when they face Wichita State at 7:00 p.m. in Carson Center.
