The University of Evansville baseball team will return home to Charles H. Braun Stadium this week to host both Murray State and crosstown rival Southern Indiana in a pair of mid-week contests.  The Purple Aces and Thoroughbreds will conclude their home-and-home series Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., before UE will square off with USI on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.

Evansville will bring a 14-18 overall record into this week’s brief two-game homestand, after the Purple Aces were able to knock off Wichita State, 5-3, in the series finale of a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series on Saturday.  Senior outfielder Jim Viscomi led UE’s effort in the win, going 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored in the 5-3 victory.  Viscomi led UE on the weekend, hitting .556 (5-for-9) in the three-game series, with three stolen bases and three runs scored at the top of the UE lineup.  Sophomore outfielder Greg Wallace, who hit .409 last week in five games with two doubles and a home run, also had two hits and drove in two runs in UE’s 5-3 victory over the Shockers.

Murray State will counter with a 20-13 overall record on Tuesday night, after the Thoroughbreds dropped the final two games of a three-game series with Southeast Missouri State over the weekend.  Murray State, which hits .326 as a team on the season, is anchored offensively by junior first baseman Wes Cunningham, who will bring a team-best .452 average into Tuesday’s contest.  Cunningham, who ranked 10th nationally in terms of batting average last week, went 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI in UE’s 11-6 victory at Murray State last Tuesday.  Evansville scored 10 of its 11 runs with two outs in the victory last week.  Junior outfielder Alex Acheson led UE’s season-high 16-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with two RBI.

Southern Indiana will then make the crosstown trip on Wednesday night to renew its rivalry with UE.  The Screaming Eagles were ranked 22nd nationally in the Division II ranks last week, before splitting a four-game conference series with Rockhurst this past weekend.  USI will bring a 28-10 overall record into Wednesday night’s game, paced by senior outfielder Chad Werry.  Werry currently leads the USI offense with a .383 average, 16 doubles, and 16 stolen bases, while ranking third on the team with five home runs and second with 31 RBI.

Both games can be seen live on-line on AcesTV at www.gopurpleaces.com.  Wednesday night’s UE-USI game can also be heard throughout the Tri-State area on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
