More shots don't always equate to more goals, and that was the case Tuesday night when the University of Evansville outshot SIU Edwardsville 15-4 but came out on the short end of a 1-0 score in the opening soccer match of the season for both teams.
The Aces had a goal at 26:45 waved off by an offside call, and both Richard Menjivar and Mike Luttrull hit the post with shots. Meanwhile, Evansville dominated ball possession in both halves. But the outcome turned on one counter play in the 78th minute, when the Cougars' Jared Tejada took the ball down the right side with a 3-on-1 advantage and made a crossing pass that was deflected into the goal by an Evansville defender.
Evansville went back on the attack and put up four more shots, but put only two on goal all night against SIUE's bend-but-no-break defense led by Cougar goalkeeper Scott Meyer, who got the shutout in his collegiate debut.
The Aces play again Friday at Chapel Hill, N.C. against UNC-Greensboro in the opening round of the UNC Nike Classic. UE plays nationally ranked North Carolina in the second round on Sunday.
