After a convincing 3-1 win over SIU-Edwardsville, the University of Evansville volleyball team (7-5, 0-1) will try to carry that confidence into its second week of conference play when it travels to Bradley (8-7, 0-2) on Friday and Northern Iowa (11-2, 2-0) on Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m.
The Aces have been led by senior
Ginta Gabruseva offensively in the last few games with two 21-kill matches in a row. Sophomore
Brooke Maher still leads the team in total kills with 138 while
Emily Wandersee carries a team-high .254 attack percentage and 31 total blocks.
Junior
Julie Sylvester leads on the defensive side of the ball with 167 digs. The Carmel native is 62 digs away from breaking into the career digs list at UE. Setter
Ellen Sawin is also on track to join UE’s best in assists, as the sophomore is right over 100 away with 530 assists this season.
At 8-7, the Braves enter Friday’s contest with recent losses to Drake and Creighton. Amy Reichel leads Bradley with 144 kills this season and an average of 2.62 per set. Setter Skylar Lesan sets up the offense and has posted 540 assists in the 15 matches played. Defensively, Megan Schmidt has 45 total blocks while Genevieve Dejean has 152 digs.
Northern Iowa opened its first conference weekend with two wins after also playing Drake and Creighton. The Panthers are currently on a nine-game win streak since two back-to-back losses against Texas A&M and Iowa State.
Offensively, Michelle Burow leads UNI with 129 kills this season to average 2.87 per set. UNI will bring a strong defensive game to the court, which is led by Krista DeGeest and Ellie Blankenship. DeGeest leads the team in total blocks with 57. Blankenship leads the NCAA in digs per set with 6.07 and a team-high 273 digs in 2009.
