NASHVILLE--All season the
University of Evansville volleyball team has been trying to get over the hump of losing the third set, but the curse struck again Tuesday night when the Aces (8-7) dropped a 3-0 match at Lipscomb (11-3) by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-9.
"It was the most disappointing loss that I have been associated with at Evansville," said Evansville head coach Mike Swan. "It was just frustrating to watch, and we weren't executing very well at all. We were very tentative on the court. We were unfocused, and we need to find a way to turn things around before the weekend."
Senior Ginta Gabruseva led the Aces with 10 kills while hitting .296 for the match. Defensively, libero Julie Sylvester collected 17 digs with junior Viera Rajcan tabbing three blocks at the net.
Gabruseva put the Aces on the board first, but Lipscomb quickly gained a 10-3 lead in the first set. The Lady Bison continued to hold a lead throughout the outing, getting as high as nine at 23-14. Lipscomb won the first set at 25-17.
The next set started as a role reversal from the first with Lipscomb scoring first and UE climbing to a 5-1 lead with kills from Gabruseva and Rajcan. After a Lipscomb timeout, the Lady Bison closed the gap to two, but back-to-back kills from Gabruseva put the Aces up 14-9. Lipscomb kept a tight grip on UE and put themselves ahead to take the 2-0 lead at 25-19.
UE could never find its composure during the third set as Lipscomb led 9-0 very early. The Bison continued to find their niche as they went on to take the set 25-9.
The Aces’ next game returns them to Carson Center where they will match up against Indiana State on Friday and Illinois State on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7:00 p.m.
