EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Eleventh ranked Creighton played 11-on-10 soccer against the University of Evansville for almost the entire match Saturday night at McCutchan Stadium, but it took overtime for the Bluejays to finally come away with a 2-1 victory.
UE senior forward Tom Irvin was red carded at 12:44, but the Aces kept the match scoreless through the first half and eventually took the lead at 54:27 when Mike Luttrull fired an open shot from 20 yards past Creighton keeper Brian Holt. Creighton's constant pressure finally paid off at 80:18 when Andrew Ribeiro went high in the air and headed a shot past Evansville's Robert Randant for the equalizer. The game-winner came at 95:29 when Creighton's leading scorer, Ethan Finlay, finally got off his first shot of the match, a chip over Randant that found the back of the net and kept the 11th ranked Bluejays unbeaten in Missouri Valley Conference play. Creighton is now 9-2-0 overall and 2-0 in the MVC. The Aces are 5-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.
Creighton won the battle of shots, 23-6, and put 10 shots on goal compared to two by the Aces. Corner kicks were even at 6-6; in fact Evansville had all three corner kicks in overtime moments before Creighton made the winning run that resulted in Finlay's goal.
The Aces play their next two on the road, Wednesday at Missouri State and Sunday at Bradley before returning home Oct. 29 to play Eastern Illinois in the nationally televised Fox Soccer Channel Game of the Week.
