The University of Evansville volleyball team dropped its second match of the weekend as they lost to Wichita State tonight 0-3. The Shockers ended the game in three sets, winning with a final score of 18-25, 18-25 and 13-25. With the loss, UE drops to 16-5 on the season, 5-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
“I think we’re all disappointed in how this weekend turned out,” said head coach Mike Swan. “I thought we had very good practices this whole week but we just came out flat for the matches.
“Our serve receive suffered again tonight,” Swan continued. “Our offense became more tentative as the match went on and we just had a lot of unforced errors.”
Entering the match with the highest team attack percentage in the MVC, the Aces were held to just 23 kills and a .041 average on the night. Senior Emily Wandersee led the Aces with a .364 percentage and five kills in the three-set match.
Junior Ellen Sawin recorded her third double-double of the season, putting up 14 assists and 12 digs in the loss.
UE’s front row put up 8 total blocks against the Shockers, including a pair of solo blocks from both Sawin and freshman Rachel TenHoor.
Set one looked promising as the Aces started out with an 11-7 lead. However, the Shockers managed to rally back with a seven-point run that put the score at 14-11 Wichita State. The Aces couldn’t stop Wichita State’s momentum as the Shockers put up 20 kills to take game one with a final score of 25-18.
The Aces found themselves down 7-1 to start the second set. The Aces were able to bring the score to within five points at 17-12, but that would be the smallest deficit of the night for UE. The Aces recorded only 7 kills and hit .023 as the Shockers ran away with game two with another 25-18 victory.
The final set started tied at 1-1, but the Shockers quickly stole the lead. The Aces were unable to shut down the Shockers’ offense as Wichita State put up a .324 attack average on the set. The Shockers went on to secure the match win with a final set score of 25-13.
“The good news is that we have a week to reset and get a little tougher mentally,” added Swan. “We have a big match against Southern Illinois next weekend and we’re optimistic that we can get back to playing to the level that we are capable of.”
The Aces hit the road again next weekend as they return to action in Carbondale, Ill., against Southern Illinois.
