The University of Evansville women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams posted wins over Centre College in today’s meet. The women won with a final score of 151-86 while the men finished with a 166-75 final score.
“It was a very good meet,” said head coach Rickey Perkins. “I think we competed very well and we are continuing to compete against each other, which is our biggest pull right now. Our goal is to make each other better, and it’s showing in our swims.”
Combined, both teams claimed first place finishes in 23 of the 26 events of the meet. The women finished with 10 first place finishes while the men swept their meet, taking first place finishes in all 13 events.
For the men swimmers, Alex Seward, Ryan Metzger and Carder LaBrake led the way for the Aces, each taking first place in two events. Michea Reinitz and Melissa Thurman collected two first place finishes apiece to lead the women swimmers.
On the boards, Jen Childers won the 1-meter event with a score of 251.95 while Sadie Wells remained undefeated on the 3-meter boards with a first place score of 279.25.
Diver Andy Balczo set a new UE record for the 3-meter dive with a score of 318.90. Balczo’s score beat the previous record of 316.46 set by Brett Fox in 1995-96. Balczo was perfect on the day, scoring 295.65 on the 1-meter boards to take first place in both diving events.
“I think it’s great that we are breaking and setting so many records, especially this early in the season,” commented Perkins. “It’s very exciting for all of us.”
Last night in the women’s meet against Illinois State, Alex Howard tied the school record for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.22. Wells also set a new school-high with her Zone-qualifying dive on the 1-meter boards. Wells’ score of 271.35 beat the former record of 260.40 that she set last season.
The men’s and women’s teams will both return to action on October 27 as they host a dual meet against Eastern Illinois. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at UE’s Wyttenbach Pool.
