These Guys Are Good! Golfers Win Again

KETTERING, Ohio -- The University of Evansville men's golf team has fallen into a habit, and the Aces would be glad to see it carry over into 2011.

Coach Jim Hamilton's Aces wrapped up their fall season Tuesday by winning their second tournament of the month, defeating 12 other schools to claim the championship in the Dayton Flyer Invitational at NCR South Golf Course.  Evansville also won the Butler Invitational on Oct. 5.

The Aces edged runnerup IUPUI 591-594, thanks to three players finishing in the top seven.  Junior Michael Sainz and freshman Parker Hensley tied for fifth in the field of 85 golfers with 36-hole totals of 5-over-par 147.  Junior Andrew Luo was right behind in seventh place at 148.  NCR South played more than 7,000 yards for this tournament, and has been the site of a PGA Championship and U.S. Women's Open.

"At Butler we had a pretty comfortable lead most of the way; here, only a couple strokes separated us during the final round," Hamilton pointed out.  "So our guys faced more pressure today, and they responded in a very positive way.  If we're going to be successful in our conference in the spring, we have to get used to situations like this.

"This is why you play the game, to see how your game handles in a pressure situation like today.  It's not easy.  It separates you from others when you can win under pressure. We have a good group of players, and it's great to see how they pull for one another and how they are able to win under pressure."

In the women's event, played at NCR North, freshman Sydney Skiles shot 76 today and finished as Evansville's team leader with a 36-hole score of 645.  She was 18th overall in the field of 56. Maggie Wood and Lauren Ellerman tied for 24th at 160.
