The 16-6 University of Evansville volleyball team hosts Bradley on Friday and 13th ranked (AVCA) Northern Iowa on Saturday at UE’s Carson Center. Both begin at 7:00 p.m.
UE is looking to snap a three-game losing streak that has put the Aces in fifth place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 5-5 league record. Bradley is 5-19 overall and 0-11 in the MVC. At the other end is 13th ranked UNI, perfect at 11-0 in the MVC and 20-2 overall. Both losses came to teams ranked in the top 25 nationally.
As a team, Evansville is hitting .231 and is in the top five in three MVC statistical categories, including hitting percentage, kills per set and service aces per set. Individually, at least one Purple Ace appears in all six categories for top ten individual leaders in the conference.
Senior Emily Wandersee leads the Aces’ offense and is ranked second in the Valley with a .355 attack percentage. Junior #Brooke Maher# has tallied a team-high 267 kills and is sixth in the MVC with 3.66 kills per set. Junior setter #Ellen Sawin# sits in fourth place in the league with an average of 10.36 assists per set. Defensively, freshman #Katie Klages# leads the back row with a team-high 329 digs on the year. Fifth-best in the MVC, Klages’ average of 4.52 digs per set makes her the highest-ranking freshman defender in the Valley.
Bradley is hitting .170 at the net with an average of 15.17 digs per set. The Braves’ offense boasts six players totaling triple-digit kills, with Amy Angelos leading the pack with 191 kills on the year. Bradley is ranked fourth in the MVC for service aces per set, led by Madelyn Ervin who has 28 aces on the season. Ervin leads the Valley with a .40 service ace per set average.
Michelle Burow leads the Northern Iowa offense with 246 kills on the year and a .335 attack percentage. Krista DeGeest has put up 211 kills of her own while totaling 91 block assists. Leading the Panthers’ defense is MVC Player of the Week Ellie Blankenship. In conference play, Blankenship is averaging 5.55 digs per set and ranks 24th in the country in overall digs per set (5.27).
