The University of Evansville men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each took second place today at the Ball State Relay Invitational. The women finished with a final score of 148, topping IUPUI and Butler. The men posted a total score of 154, falling just short of Ball State
“This weekend went really well for us,” said head coach Rickey Perkins. “Both teams got a chance to go up against some really great competition and we had a lot of good swims. It was a very good training weekend for us, and we got to get in a lot of swims in a short amount of time which is what we need right now.”
The men’s team took seven first place finishes. Senior Will Spradley was part of three winning relay teams, taking first place in the 400, 500 and 800-free. The men’s team also posted top times in the 1000 and 3000 yard relay to end the meet. Senior diver Andy Balczo won the 3M dive, while freshman Mallet Reid posted the high score for the 1M.
The women’s solo first place finish was the 1500-freestyle relay team consisting of senior Christina Schmidgall, sophomore Phoebe Hodina and freshman Melissa Thurman. Senior diver Jennifer Childers recorded the highest diving finish for the Aces, placing second in the 1M.
“I was very pleased with how well we worked as a team and cheered each other on this weekend,” added Perkins. “Now we’re looking forward to a good week of practice and getting refocused for next weekend.”
The Aces return to action 6:00 p.m. Friday when they host Illinois State.
