The Indiana State Sycamores took a 3-0 victory over the University of Evansville volleyball team in tonight’s match in Terre Haute, Ind. UE lost by final set scores of 38-36, 25-18 and 25-22.
Sophomore Hannah Wilson recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 digs and a team-high 11 kills. Freshman Katie Klages led the Aces’ defense with 30 digs on the night, just one shy of her season-high. Senior Emily Wandersee and junior Kaisi Nixon each totaled 10 kills.
The Aces (16-9, 5-8) ended on the tough side of a marathon battle as they dropped the first set by a score of 38-36. Evansville led by seven points at 9-2, but the Sycamores (7-20, 2-12) were able to catch up to UE and tie the game at 14-all. The set then turned into a point battle, as neither team could gain control of the game. The score was tied 16 more times before a final Sycamore kill brought the set to a heartbreaking end for the Aces.
The Aces fell behind 3-0 to start game two and never were able to catch up enough to pull ahead of the Sycamores. Evansville rallied to tie the game at 4-all, but Indiana State managed to pull away and stay in the lead for the rest of the way. Wandersee totaled a set-high five kills as the Sycamores took game two by a score of 25-18.
Indiana State jumped out to another 3-0 lead to begin set three, but the Aces were able to come back to take an 11-9 lead. The Sycamores didn’t stay down for long though, as each team fought for offensive control. The score was tied at 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 21 and 22-all, but three back-to-back Sycamore kills delivered the final blow to the Aces as Indiana State took game three by a score of 25-22.
The Aces return to action tomorrow night as they take on the Illinois State Redbirds in Normal, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
