UE Ready To Host State Farm MVC Golf Championship

4/12/2010 4:49:45 PM

Only once has the same school won three consecutive State Farm Missouri Valley Conference women's golf championships. It could happen again in 2010, with two-time defending league champ Illinois State expected to be favored when the University of Evansville hosts the annual event Sunday through Tuesday, April 18-20, at Rolling Hills Country Club in Newburgh. This will be the first time since 2000 that UE has hosted the State Farm MVC Tournament. It took place at Victoria National Golf Club that year.

The 10 teams will play practice rounds Saturday, and the tournament begins Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The teams will play 18 holes each of the three days, and fans are invited to attend free of charge. Illinois State edged Drake by 12 shots last year, 921-933, at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora, Iowa to win its second straight title. Tulsa is the only school to win three consecutive MVC championships, from 1994 through 1996. Two defending individual champions will be competing at Rolling Hills. Drake's Olivia Lansing was the 2008 MVC medalist and Illinois State's Stacey Miller won last year. Lansing has won a league-best three tournaments in 2009-10, and has been MVC Player of the Week four weeks in a row.

Evansville's top players are juniors Emily Johnson and Maggie Wood. They are separated by just two shots; Johnson with 1,687 strokes during the 2009-10 season for an 80.3 average, and Wood at 1,689 for an 80.4 average.
