The UE volleyball team started the 2010 season in fine fashion as they rolled over the IUPUI Jaguars in a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-20, 25-13).

“Obviously we’re very pleased with the win,” said head coach Mike Swan. “Our defense was really aggressive and kept a lot of tough balls in play. The difference maker in each set was that we hung onto the lead and never looked back. Hopefully we can take that aggressiveness into tomorrow as well as the rest of our season.”

Three Aces finished the match hitting over .300. Seniors Emily Wandersee and junior Brooke Maher led the offensive fire, delivering 11 kills each, while senior Viera Rajcan added eight. Defensively, UE totaled 62 digs on the day, 10 of which came from freshman Katie Kalges in her collegiate debut. Junior April Lubrecht led the Aces’ defense with 17 digs.

The first set looked like a close battle from the beginning. IUPUI tied the score at 1-1 and then again at 8-8, but the Aces refused to lose the lead. UE put up 15 kills as the score went back and forth. A crucial kill by junior Kaisi Nixon at 16-15 put the Aces in good position to pull away. The Aces defense held off the Jaguars’ attacks, keeping UE ahead by at least two points until UE finally clinched the win with a 25-20 final score.

Starting off behind 0-2 in the second set, the Aces battled back to tie the score at 2-2 with a kill by Wandersee. A second kill by Wandersee again broke the tie at 4-4 and sparked an Aces rally. UE went on a five point run before the Jaguars answered back to bring the score to 9-5.  As each team rallied back and forth, the Aces kept the lead and ran the score to 24-20 before a kill by Maher ended the game.

The Aces took the momentum from the win into the third set, starting the game with a 3-0 lead. A kill by Wandersee at 3-3 sent the Aces on an eight-point run before IUPUI was able to put another point on the board. With the lead at 14-6, UE took advantage of a few Jaguar miscues to bring the score to 18-9. Kills by Rajcan and Maher fueled the Aces’ offense as they increased their lead. Sophomore Hannah Wilson got the final kill of the match to secure the sweep with a 25-13 win.

The Aces hope to continue their success as they take on the Bowling Green Falcons tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. Aces fans can follow the action live by watching the Live Stats.
