Second Game, Second Sweep For The Aces

The University of Evansville volleyball team secured its second sweep of the season with a win over Bowling Green 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16).

“We’re very excited about the win,” said head coach Mike Swan. “We looked really sharp today and our blocking was especially strong. We’re hoping to carry this momentum and put up a good fight against Michigan State tonight.”

Junior Kaisi Nixon ended the game with a .467 attack percentage, breaking her career high of .438 set in 2009. Sophomore Hannah Wilson also set a new personal best with an attack percentage of .389 against the Falcons. Senior Emily Wandersee led the offense with 10 kills on the day.

Senior Ellen Sawin tallied 27 assists in the win, while freshman Jenn Murphy added four.

The Aces came out strong in the first set of the match, leading 4-0 before Bowling Green could put a point on the board. The aggressive Aces continued to dominate the Falcons, twice leading by 11 points. The Falcons rallied back late in the game, bringing the score within six at 21-15, but a block by Sawin and Nixon silenced their efforts. Bowling Green brought the score to 24-19 before a block by Wandersee and senior Viera Rajcan ended the game.

The Falcons jumped ahead early to start the second set, but the Aces managed to tie it up at 3-3 before running the score to a 9-3 lead. A kill by junior Brooke Maher followed by a block from Wandersee and Wilson secure a nine-point lead at 17-8. Bowling Green battled to bring the game within five points at 18-13, but back-to-back kills by Wilson and Nixon helped the Aces regain control. A kill by Rajcan put the score at 24-17 before UE took the win on a Bowling Green attack error.

With the momentum swinging their way, the Aces jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Back-to-back kills by Wandersee put the score at 4-1, but the Falcons managed to tie it up at 4-4. Wandersee answered with another kill and sent the Aces on a five-point rally. The Aces’ offense exploded with nine more kills to bring the score to 22-13. A kill by Wilson brought the match to 24-16 before Evansville secured the sweep on a Falcon error.

The Aces (2-0) will play their final game of the tournament tonight at 6:00 pm as they take on host Michigan State. Aces fans can follow the game live by watching the Live Stats.
