The University of Evansville volleyball team made its home debut a night to remember with a 3-0 sweep over the Western Carolina Catamounts. The Aces won by set scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-12.

The Aces’ offense erupted with 50 kills on the night to control the match. Senior Emily Wandersee shattered her career-high attack percentage, posting a .727 average with 16 kills. She now is tied for first with Jessica Kiefer for attack percentage in the UE match records.

Junior Brooke Maher also posted a new career-high attack percentage, hitting .556 on the night with 11 kills. The Aces as a team hit an impressive .471, which earned the team the first place spot in the UE match record books, beating the previous record of .432 set in 1995.

“This was a huge win for us because it was our first game at Carson and we always want to win at home,” said head coach Mike Swan. “Our hitting percentage was just phenomenal and our blocking really got going as the game went on. Hopefully we can step it up even more and continue our success tomorrow.”

The first set started as a close battle with the Catamounts tying the score at 2-2. Evansville managed to put up an 18-14 lead before going on a 7-point run to win the game. Wandersee put up 7 kills and a double-block with freshman Rachel TenHoor to lead the Aces to the win.

Game two started with a 2-0 Aces lead, but the Catamounts managed to chip away at the score and eventually tie it up at 7-7. Neither team was able to gain the offensive advantage until a kill by Kaisi Nixon sparked a UE rally. The Aces tallied 19 kills and 14 digs to push UE to a 25-17 victory

All 12 Aces saw playing time in the third set. Tied at 4-4 to start the game, UE took advantage of a few Catamount errors to push score to 10-6. Five consecutive Aces kills sent UE to a 20-11 lead before the Aces went on to secure the sweep with a 25-12 win.

With the win, the Aces move to 7-1, while Western Carolina drops to 3-5. The Aces return to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow to take on Loyola before returning at 6:00 p.m. to play Murray State in the final game of the UE Dunn Hospitality Tournament. Earlier today, Loyola took a 3-2 win from Murray State with final set scores of 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 12-15
