The 9-1 University of Evansville volleyball team will host the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars for a mid-week match-up at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Carson Center.
“SIUE has always been a competitive program, but we are taking the same approach into every match this season,” said head coach Mike Swan. “We’re only looking at the current opponent and nothing more.”
That approach seems to be working for Coach Swan and his team. The Aces are on a roll, winning their last seven contests- the last five of those wins being 3-0 sweeps. Last weekend the Aces claimed the UE Dunn Hospitality Tournament championship, posting 3-0 wins over Western Carolina, Loyola-Chicago and Murray State.
The Aces’ offense is led by Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week Emily Wandersee, who has tallied 123 kills on the season with an average of 3.97 kills per set. In UE’s nine sets last weekend, the senior recorded a .529 attack percentage while tallying 45 kills.
Junior Brooke Maher looks to stay hot after recording her fourth and fifth double-double performances in wins over Loyola and Murray State. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Katie Klages stepped up last weekend and now leads the Aces’ defense with 100 digs. As a team, UE has out-blocked their opponents 71-37 with Wandersee and junior Kaisi Nixon each recording 34 and 32 blocks, respectively.
The Cougars (3-4) enter Wednesday’s match coming off of a 3-0 loss against MVC member Illinois State. The SIUE offense has accumulated an attack percentage of .195 this season. The Cougars are led by senior Sydney Winslow, who has tallied 75 kills so far, averaging 3.0 kills per set. Winslow has also recorded team highs for service aces with eight as well as blocking with 13.
