Aces Bounce Back With 3-0 Win

The University of Evansville volleyball team (12-2) bounced back from their Saturday night loss against Creighton with a 3-0 sweep of the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames tonight (25-15, 26-24, 25-18).

 

“It’s good that we were able to come back and get a win tonight,” said head coach Mike Swan. “Hopefully we can build on this and take some momentum into the big match-up against Southern Illinois Saturday.”

 

Senior Emily Wandersee and junior Brooke Maher each tallied 11 kills to lead the Aces’ offense. As a team, UE put up 38 kills on the night with a .242 attack percentage. Freshman Katie Klages totaled a team-high 11 digs while freshman Rachel TenHoor was big at the net, recording two solo blocks and one block assist. 

 

Jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start the night, the Aces stayed in the driver’s seat for the entire first set. The Flames closest rally brought them to a 6-3 deficit, but the Aces offense put up 17 kills to run the score 24-14 before a kill by TenHoor ended the game. 

 

Set two proved to be a little more challenging for the Aces, as each team battled for offensive control throughout the entire game. Wth neither side able to gain more than a three-point advantage, the score was tied a total of 13 different times throughout the set. At match point, the Aces trailed 24-23, but a kill by Wandersee kept UE alive. Back-to-back UIC errors would give the Aces the win with a final score of 26-24.

 

Game three started in the same fashion that game two had ended, as both teams were fighting neck-and-neck. The Aces came out with 5-2 lead to start the set, but the Flames managed to tie the game at 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 10-, and 11-all before the Aces could pull away. Consecutive kills by Wandersee and Maher sparked an Aces rally and UE took control of the game. The Aces pushed the score to 24-18 before a final kill by Maher secured the win.

 

The Aces return to action Saturday as resume Missouri Valley Conference play and host the Southern Illinois Salukis (9-3, 0-2).
