The Aces claimed the Troy Spiketacular tournament title as they closed out Sunday with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16. 18-25, 25-17) win over Western Illinois and a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19. 25-23) win over host Troy.
“Obviously we feel really good about going 3-0 and winning the tournament outright,” said head coach Mike Swan. “We had quality play throughout the weekend at every position. I think our blocking game is continuing to improve and offensively we’re getting a lot of good swings at the net.”
Match 1 vs. Western Illiniois:
Junior Brooke Maher led the team with 12 kills in the first match. Maher was just one dig shy of posting her second consecutive double-double. Freshman Katie Klages followed Maher defensively, tallying 7 digs. Freshman Rachel TenHoor put up a team-high 5 blocks while also adding 4 kills at the net.
The Aces jumped out to an early 5-1 lead to start the first set, but the Leathernecks managed to tie it up at 6-6. The two teams battled to gain the offensive advantage, but the Aces pulled away with an 8-point run, bringing the score to 18-10. WIU managed to put a few more points on the board, but a kill by junior Kaisi Nixon gave the Aces the win with a final score of 25-17.
UE started the second set with a 2-0 lead, but the Leathernecks tied it up at 5-5 before taking control of the game. The Aces rallied back to take the lead at 10-9, but the score remained close as the two teams battled. UE pulled out the win with a 25-16 Final score.
The Aces started with the lead in set three, but the Leathernecks quickly took control of the game and ran the score to 9-4. The Aces fought to catch up, but WIU never relinquished the lead as the Leathernecks took game three with a final score of 18-25.
Rebounding from the third set, the Aces came out with a 7-2 lead in the fourth set. The Aces’ offense proved to be too powerful for WIU as UE ran away with the score. The Aces led the Leathernecks by as much as seven points before a kill by Nixon delivered the final blow. The Aces finished the game with a final score of 25-17.
Match 2 vs. Troy:
Wandersee posted a team-high 15 kills in the Aces second match of the day. Maher earned her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs. Lubrecht anchored the Aces’ defense with 19 digs. TenHoor led the team with a .375 attack percentage coming from her 7 kills.
UE started set one with a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The Aces maintained their lead as the score climbed to 18-10. The Trojans threatened to rally back, but the Aces’ offense answered back as the Aces secured a 10-point lead before a kill by Maher ended the game at 25-16.
The Aces found themselves behind 6-1 to start the second set. UE fought to gain control of the game and a kill by Maher tied the game at 11-11 spurred an Aces rally. UE led the Trojans 24-19 before Maher delivered a game-ending kill to claim the win.
The Trojans jumped out to an early 6-2 lead to start what would be a very close final set. Each team battled, and the Aces were able to tie it up at 15-15 before the Trojans pulled ahead again. UE fought to tie it up again at 22-22 with a kill by Nixon before the Aces went on to win the game with a final score of 25-23.
The Aces (5-1) look to improve their record as they travel to Tennessee-Martin to take on the Skyhawks at 7:00 p.m.
