The University of Evansville volleyball team improved to 6-1 with a 3-0 sweep over the University of Tennesee-Martin Skyhawks. The Aces won by final set scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-12.

“Everybody is very excited about the way we have been playing so far,” said head coach Mike Swan. “It’s definitely one of the best starts to a season that I can remember.”

Senior Emily Wandersee had a standout night, racking up16 kills and hitting an impressive .464. Wandersee also tallied one solo block and four block assists. Junior Brooke Maher posted nine kills while sophomore Hannah Wilson added seven of her own. As a team, the Aces tallied five service aces.

“Tonight I thought we came out serving a lot more aggressively, which makes it tougher on the other teams’ defense,” added Swan.

UE started game one tied at 1-1 with the Skyhawks, but the Aces’ offense exploded for a nine-point run before UTM could manage another point. The Skyhawks struggled to catch up, but their efforts were silenced by eight Aces’ kills as well as two service aces from junior April Lubrecht. UE went on to win the game 25-14.

Game two proved to be a closer match as each team battled point-for-point to bring the score to 16-17. UE capitalized on a handful of Skyhawk errors and added four Aces’ kills to bolster their lead and secure the 25-17 win.

The Aces kept their momentum rolling into the third set, coming out of the gates with a 4-0 lead. The Skyhawks threatened to take the lead at 8-7, but a kill by freshman Rachel TenHoor pushed the Aces to a 9-7 lead. The Aces tacked on seven more kills before Wilson delivered the game-ending hit to secure the 25-12 win.

UE will return to Carson Center to make its home debut this weekend as the Aces host the Aces Invitational presented by Dunn Hospitality. The Aces play host to Western Carolina, Loyola-Chicago and Murray State. UE will take on Western Carolina in its first match at 6:00 p.m. Friday night.
