EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Battling pouring rain and a slick Black Beauty field Wednesday night, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team suffered a tough, 2-1, loss to the visiting Drake Bulldogs in the first home Missouri Valley Conference match of the season. With the loss, the Purple Aces even their record to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the MVC, while Drake improves to 8-4-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
The Bulldogs scored quickly, just 1:52 minutes into the contest, when Thomas Ostrander knocked a rebound from the right side past goalkeeper
Eric Teppen for a 1-0 advantage.
As the rain picked up, the scoring came to a halt until the 54
th minute when freshman
Charlie Macias tallied his first career goal tying the match, one all. Macias received a cross from senior
Jarrett Robbins, right to left, and chipped it in past keeper Jordan Kadlec.
In the 62
nd minute, Drake’s Matt Kuhn scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway. Kuhn lined a hard-kicked ball from the right side of the box to the back left corner of the net.
Despite the outcome, the Aces outshot the Bulldogs, 15-7 and 9-7 on goal, including 10 shots in the first half which matched the squad’s season-high.
Freshman Ryan Stallings led UE with four shots, three on goal, followed by senior
Tad Kreamalmeyer, sophomore
Alex Kapsalis, and junior
Jesse Sharp’s two.
Teppen finished with five saves in the 90:00 minute match.
The Aces are back in action Saturday when they play host to Missouri State at 7:30 p.m. CT.
