FISHERS, Ind.—The University of Evansville men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each opened the 2011-12 season with a win in today’s meet hosted by Butler University. The women claimed the top finish with wins over Butler, Saint Louis, Wright State and Valparaiso, while the men swept the board with victories over Saint Louis, Wright State and Valpo.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said head coach Rickey Perkins. “Both teams have been working very hard in the pool and the weight room, and today it showed. I was impressed with our performances, but now we will refocus on the task of getting better today than what we were yesterday.”

Overall, Evansville had a swimmer finish in the Top-3 of all but one event on the day. In UE’s best event of the meet, the women locked up the top four spots of the 200-yard breaststroke, led by Caroline Lee, who touched in at 2:26.21 in her collegiate debut.

Also for the women, Melissa Thurman captured the top-time in the 1000-yard freestyle while Alex Howard claimed first in the 200-backstroke. In her first meet of her collegiate career, Michelle Tipton won the 500-free with a time of 5:07.59. Last year’s Missouri Valley Conference Co-Diver Of The Year, Sadie Wells, picked up where she left off, posting a score of 225.85 to win the 3-meter.

The 400-yard relay team of Ryan Metzger, Gabriel Caradang, Alex Seward and Jake Harrington took first place with a time of 3:35.14 to open the meet for the men’s team. Seward also notched a first place finish in the 200-butterfly while Metzger took first in the 200-yard backstroke. On the boards, Mallet Reid won the 1-meter with a score of  243.05.

The Aces will return to action next weekend as the women host Southern Illinois while the men travel to Carbondale to take on both Southern Illinois and Miami of Ohio.
