Swimming And Diving Splits With Ball State

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The University of Evansville men’s and women’s swimming and diving team split in a dual meet against Ball State today.  The Aces men’s team defeated the Cardinals 158-130 while the women fell 162-138. 
 
“I am extremely proud of our performance today,” said head coach Rickey Perkins.  “This meet is just a testament to how hard the team has worked.  They have done everything we have asked and more.”
 
For the men’s team, junior Alex Seward tallied three first place finishes on the day, winning both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly as well as the 200-yard individual medley.
 
Junior Jake Harrington,  sophomore Ryan Metzger, and freshmen Garret Johnson and Matthew Newland also took first in individual events. Harrington won the 200-yard freestyle while Metzger took the 200-yard backstroke. Newland and Metzger swept the distance events, winning the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle races, respectively.
 
On the boards, sophomore diver Mallet Reid placed first on the 3-meter with a score of 243.85.
 
Harrington, along with senior Will Spradley, junior Kyle Tiemann and freshman Ashton Bishop, closed out the meet with a first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching in with a time of 3:11.55.
 
The women’s team ended with seven first place finishes on the day. Senior Alex Howard led the Aces with top times in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke.  Freshman Michelle Tipton also finished with two first-place times, winning both the 200- and 500-yard free.
 
Sophomore Melissa Thurman claimed the 1000-yard free, finishing at 10:46.71. Freshman Caroline Lee touched in at 4:38.03 to win the 400-yard IM while freshman Samantha Montgomery took first the 200-yard butterfly.
 
Junior Sadie Wells won the 3-meter dive with a score of 239.55 and was just 3.30 points away from winning the 1-meter as well.
 
Both squads will travel to Eastern Illinois for a dual meet with the Panthers tomorrow. The meet is set to begin at noon.
