Aces Earn First Win, Split In Day Two Of Mardi Gras Tourney

MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Evansville softball team earned its first win of the 2011 season with a 10-3 victory over Southeastern Louisiana to open day two of the South Alabama Mardi Gras Tournament in Mobile, Ala. In the second game of UE’s doubleheader, the Aces were defeated by South Alabama 18-0 in five innings.

The Aces (1-3) will close out the day three of the Mardi Gras Tournament with a single game against Ohio State tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Game 1- UE 10, Southeastern Louisiana 3

The Aces were able to score in four of the seven innings in today’s first game as they secured the first victory of the 2011 season.

The Lions' pitching staff passed out six walks in the top of the first inning to help UE start the day off right by jumping out to an early 3-0. The Aces went on to add seven more runs throughout the game, four of which came in the sixth inning.

The Lions’ three runs all came from solo home runs off starting UE pitcher freshman Emily Morris. Throwing a complete game in the circle, Morris (1-1) recorded her first collegiate win in style, scattering six hits over seven innings with one strikeout and no walks.

UE’s defense was flawless behind Morris, committing no errors. Sophomore first baseman Alicia Betancur recorded a career-high 17 putouts.

Senior Jen Stahlhut was 3-for-3 at the plate while batting in four runs for the Aces. Freshman Katie Sears, junior Amy Gaertner, Betancur and Stahlhut each doubled at the plate for. The team also recorded a season-low three strikeouts throughout the game.

With the win, Evansville improved its record to 1-2 while dropping the Lions to 4-4 on the season.

Game 2: UE 0, South Alabama 18 (5 innings)

Sixteen Jaguar hits and a 14-run fourth inning gave host South Alabama the 18-0 win in the second game of UE’s doubleheader today. Junior Ashleigh Rahming and freshmen Taylor Perry and Niki Rahming accounted for the Aces’ three hits of the game. Junior Maggie Little (0-2) was charged with the loss on the mound.

South Alabama improves to 6-2 on the season and remains unbeaten in the Mardi Gras Tournament.
