HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The University of Evansville softball team fell twice today at the Southern Mississippi Invitational. The Aces were defeated by host Southern Mississippi, 10-1, before coming up short against Mississippi Valley, 6-5.
Senior Jen Stahlhut was 4-for-6 at the plate while collecting three doubles on the day. Junior Amy Gaertner led the team with two runs batted in.
The Aces return to the field tomorrow to face Nicholls State at 10:00 CST and Troy at 12:30 CST in the final day of the Southern Miss Invite.
Game 1: Evansville 1 Southern Mississippi 10 (5 innings)
The Golden Eagles got on the board early, taking a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run by Jill Mathis in the first inning. Southern Miss was able to bring in six more runs off of freshman starter Emily Morris in the second inning before junior Maggie Little entered the game in the circle.
A two-run fourth inning for the Golden Eagles was all that Southern Miss would need to close the game, winning by a final score of 10-1 in five innings
The Aces’ only run of the night came when senior Kelci Alsip managed a two-out single in the top of the fourth inning, and later scored on a passed ball.
Stahlhut was the only other Ace to get a hit, belting her 38th career double in the first inning.
Morris (1-3) took the loss on the mound.
Game 2: Evansville 5 Mississippi Valley 6
A two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave the Devilettes a 2-0 lead to start the game. The lead didn’t last long though, as UE responded with back-to-back doubles by Stahlhut and Gaertner to push across two runs and tie the game at 2-all.
The game was locked in a pitchers’ duel until the sixth inning when another Devilette homer gave Mississippi Valley a 4-2 lead. Freshman
Samantha Meyer entered the game in relief for sophomore starter
Kendall Kautz to end the inning.
Junior Ashleigh Rahming delivered a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the sixth to start a UE rally. Stahlhut and freshman Katie Sears each added a single to bring three UE runs across the plate and give Evansville the 5-4 lead going into the top of the seventh.
Evansville was just one out away from closing the game before another two-run homerun gave the Devilletes a one run lead. Unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, the Aces fell by a final score of 6-5.
The Aces recorded nine hits at the plate. Stahlhut was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run batted in.
Meyer (0-1) was charged with the loss on the mound.
