Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – With the score tied, 3-3, heading into the bottom of the second, Indiana State broke the game open with two runs in that frame and one in the eighth to take game one from the University of Evansville baseball team by a score of 6-3 Friday night at Bob Warn Field. The loss snapped the Aces’ five-game winning streak and dropped their record to 25-16 overall and 5-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Sycamores improved to 23-20 and 5-8 in the MVC.
Reigning MVC Pitcher of the Week Kyle Lloyd (4-5) took the loss, hurling seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, six hits, two walks, and struck out two. Middle-reliever Chris Machado (4-2) earned the win for the Sycamores, throwing two and a third innings, allowing no runs, one hit, and struck out two.
Seniors Cody Fick and Ryan Oesterle led Evansville at the plate with two hits apiece in UE’s six-hit effort. Fick also recorded an RBI and run scored, while Oesterle tallied two RBI. Sophomores Eric Stamets and Chris Pearson each had one hit.
ISU struck in the bottom of the first on Jeremy Lucas’ two-run shot over the left-centerfield wall that gave the Sycamores an early 2-0 head start.
However, Lloyd settled down from there, holding ISU scoreless until the fifth inning when Indiana State strung a single, sacrifice bunt, and another single together for one run, to go up 3-0.
The Aces had a quick response though, tying the ball game in the sixth. Stamets led off the inning with a single off starter Colin Rea, and scored on Fick’s RBI double to right-centerfield. With two outs, Oesterle belted a double, scoring Fick and Jared Baehl, who reached on a fielder’s choice, making it 3-3.
But that was all the offense the Aces could muster as ISU scored the next three runs unanswered. In the seventh, Lloyd walked the leadoff man, Jon Hedges, and Tyler Wampler followed with a single to left-center. On a bobbled bunt, the Sycamores loaded the bases, and Jordan Pearson’s ground out and Kyle Burnam’s sacrifice fly put ISU ahead for good, 5-3.
Off reliever Tyler Miller, Indiana State tacked on one more run on Hedges’ two-out RBI double that scored Lucas.
ISU’s Blake Drake earned the save, putting the Aces down in order in the ninth.
Evansville looks to bounce back Saturday in game two. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. CT (2:00 p.m. ET).
