EVANSVILLE, Ind. – #Ashley Ring
and Hannah Wilson# were at it again on Saturday as they tallied 19 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead the University of Evansville volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Indiana State at the Carson Center.
In what was a huge win by the Aces (4-9, 1-1 MVC), they came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two games and earn their first MVC win. Ring had 19 kills on the night to go along with 13 digs while Wilson registered 14 kills and 12 digs.
Shea Doran led all players with 26 kills for Indiana State (2-10, 0-2 MVC) as Loni Mackinson had 51 assists to lead all players.
The first two sets were tales of two different teams. Indiana State dominated the opening frame to earn a 25-18 win before Evansville fought back in dominant fashion to earn an identical 25-18 win in set number two.
Doran notched six kills in the first stanza to give ISU the early edge. Her play helped the Sycamores open up a 10-7 edge early on before extending the lead to five points at 16-11. Ashley Ring, who notched six kills in the first set, helped UE score three in a row before the Sycamores responded with three straight of their own to hold a 19-14 lead.
Indiana State overcame another 3-0 UE run to grab a 25-18 win as Cassandra Willis finished off the set with a kill of her own giving ISU a 1-0 lead.
Evansville found its groove in the next game as Hannah Wilson had five kills to lead the Aces to a 25-18 win of their own. Freshman
Stephanie Cerino had a pair of kills early on as the Aces scored the first three points. UE kept the pedal to the floor as stretched that edge to 13-4 thanks in part to three ISU errors.
With UE up 23-13, the Sycamores made a mini-run as they scored five of the next six points, but Cerino tallied the winning point to even up the match.
The Sycamores seemed to take control of things in the third set as they swung their way to a 25-13 win as they combined to tally 14 kills while limiting UE to eight. Evansville scored the opening two points before ISU scraped with four-straight to take their first lead. Up 6-5, Indiana State kicked it into high gear as they finished the set on a 19-8 run to take a 2-1 edge on the night.
In a back-and-forth match, Evansville bounced back in a big way in set number four as Ring hammered home seven kills in a 25-20 win. The only lead the Sycamores would enjoy was at 2-1 as Evansville scored five out of six points to take a 6-3 edge.
A 4-0 spurt by UE later gave them a 13-7 edge which would hold strong at 19-14. Indiana State fought back, closing to within a point at 20-19 before UE finished on a 5-1 stretch thanks to four late kills by Ring.
Evansville put the finishing touches on the night in the final frame, scoring the first three points before cruising to a 15-7 win. Ring had four kills while
Meaghan Holmes came up big with three kills in the set.
Next week begins with a trip to SIUE Edwardsville on Tuesday before the Aces play their first two conference road games at Wichita State on Friday and at Missouri State on Saturday.
