BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Newcomer
Alex Turner shot a 145 in the opening two rounds as the University of Evansville men’s golf team stands in a tie for third place following the opening two rounds of the John Piper Intercollegiate on Monday.
Turner opened the day with an even 72 before shooting a 1-over 73 in round two. The freshman stands in a tie for fifth place entering Tuesday’s final round of 18.
Parker Hensley finished the day two strokes behind with a 147. Hensley is tied for 8
th place overall after carding a 1-under 71 in the opening round and a 76 later in the day.
Rick VoyVodig is tied for 17
th following his 150 while
Quinn Vilneff is a shot behind with a 151. Rounding out the UE squad was
Will Knights, who registered a 162.
Josiah Ashba posted a 155 shooting as an individual.
Evansville is within shouting distance of the lead as they stand six strokes behind leader Cleveland State. The Vikings cruised to a 587 on Monday and are three strokes ahead of second-place Wright State. The Aces (593) are tied for third with Oakland University while Ashland University rounds out the top five with a 594.
The top individual on the day was Wes Gates from Bowling Green. He shot a tournament low 66 in round one before posting another strong round of 69. His 135 is six shots ahead of Cody Nickson of Wright State. Jonathon Riemer of Cleveland State and Mark Scott Jr. from Ashland are tied for third place with a 144 while Turner leads UE’s charge with a 145.
Tuesday’s final round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
