SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – #Ashley Ring# led the University of Evansville with 12 kills, but Christine McCartney responded with 13 for Missouri State as the Bears came away with a 3-0 win over the Aces in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action on Saturday evening.
Ring tallied 12 kills for UE (5-11, 1-3 MVC) while
Stephanie Cerino and
Hannah Wilson each finished with seven.
Lauren Robertson notched 19 assists on the night while
Katie Klages tallied 14 digs.
Missouri State (8-7, 3-1 MVC) was led by McCartney while Amber Doolittle tallied 11. Carly Thomas led all players with 34 assists.
MSU used an early 5-0 run with the score tied at 3-3 to earn the victory in the opening frame. Cerino notched a kill to stop the run, but the Bears notched four more points in a row as they would cruise to a 25-19 win. Missouri State was up 24-16 before Ring notched three-straight kills before Doolittle notched a kill to finish the set.
Evansville was strong early in the second set as Ring opened it up with a kill. The teams managed to tie the game at each point leading up to a 13-13 tie before MSU slowly pulled away. Up 15-14, the Bears utilized a 4-0 run to jump out to a 5-point edge. Robertson and
Lauren Seyller brought UE back with three, 19-16, but it was Missouri State who tallied the final six points en route to a 25-16 win.
In the third game, it was the Aces who came out firing as they jumped out to a 7-3 advantage as Wilson registered a pair of early kills. The lead would remain at four points as a MSU service error gave UE a 16-12 lead.
Looking to seal the match, MSU reeled off the next six points to take their first lead at 18-16. UE fought right back, retaking the lead at 21-20 after a Cerino kill and MSU error. The run eventually led to a 24-24 tie, but Kaitlin Jaeger notched a kill to finish off the 3-0 sweep.
The Aces return to the Carson Center for their next three matches as they host Drake and Creighton next weekend before welcoming UT Martin on October 2.
