ST. LOUIS – Southeast Missouri State set the tone early on, taking a 25-9 win in the opening set to sweep past the University of Evansville volleyball team, 3-0, at the Active Ankle Challenge.
Freshman
Stephanie Cerino led the Aces with eight kills while
Jenn Murphy had 15 assists. On the defensive side, it was
Katie Klages tallying 17 digs while
Ashley Ring notched ten. Leading the Redhawks was Colleen Yarber, who had 14 kills. Julie Shives led everyone with 36 assists while SEMO had four players with double figures in digs. For her efforts on the weekend, Klages garnered All-Tournament honors.
SEMO dominated the first frame, scoring the opening three points before running away with a 25-9 win. Up 16-7, the Redhawks utilized an 8-0 run to pull away for the win. Three UE errors, coupled with a pair of Yarber kills, dominated the run.
Evansville put up a strong fight in the second set, which saw the Aces notch an early 2-0 lead thanks to kills by Ring and Cerino. UE led by as many as three points at 7-4 as
Hannah Wilson and
Lauren Seyller notched kills, but SEMO fought back to an 8-8 tie.
Fourteen ties ensued as the game would be tied up at 24-24. SEMO had an opportunistic kill by Yarber before a UE error ended the set with the Redhawks taking a 26-24 victory.
The Redhawks put the finishing touch on the match with another dominant set, taking a 25-11 win. Evansville stayed close, but a pair of SEMO runs put the game out of reach. Down 10-7, the Aces allowed SEMO to score four consecutive points to take a 14-7 lead before 7-0 stretch by SEMO capped off the match. Up 18-10, the Redhawks forced a pair of UE errors while recording four kills en route to the 25-11 win.
The Aces will look to improve upon their 3-7 mark on Tuesday as they play host to Belmont on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Carson Center.
