Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Junior
Meaghan Holmes registered six kills and two blocks, but Wichita State posted a solid offensive outing in taking a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team on Saturday evening.
Holmes had six kills and was followed by
Stephanie Cerino's total of five.
Katie Klages led UE (6-11, 1-5 MVC) with 10 digs while
Jenn Murphy tallied 17 assists. Ashley Andrade finished with 11 kills for WSU (15-3, 5-0 MVC) while Katie Reilly had nine.
Making a large difference in the final score was the offense for the Shockers, which hit .212 while limiting Evansville to -.080 for the night.
The Shockers established a quick tempo from the start as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening frame as Ashley Andrade had two early kills. Evansville got within three points at 7-4 on a Cerino ace, but the Shockers kept the pressure on as a 5-1 stretch saw them earn a 25-16 victory.
In the second set, Holmes helped the Aces score the first three points and five out of the first six as a
Lauren Seyller kill capped off the stretch. Just as fast as they garnered that advantage, UE saw WSU fight right back with a 9-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. Wichita State forced four Evansville errors in the run.
What would eventually turn into a 15-2 stretch, Wichita State took control and would finish on a 7-1 run to take a 25-11 victory and go up 2-0 on the night.
Evansville hung tough in the third game, starting off at 2-2 as the Aces forced two WSU errors. The Shockers opened up an early 3-point lead before the Aces fought back with a
Rachel TenHoor kill to get within a tally at 8-7. That rally ended with three WSU points in a row as their advantage grew to seven and that is what the final would be, 25-18.
The Purple Aces are back in action at the Carson Center next weekend as they play host to UNI on Friday evening at 7 p.m. before squaring off against Drake at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening.
