EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men's soccer team saw its Senior Day spoiled by visiting Bradley Saturday afternoon at Arad McCutchan Stadium, as Alon Badat scored the game-winner for the Braves in the 107th minute to give BU a 2-1, double-overtime victory in the regular-season finale for both squads.
Evansville (10-7-1, 2-4-0 MVC) got its only goal in the 88th minute, when sophomore
Mark Anthony Gonzalez scored for the ninth time this season to tie the match at 1-1 and force overtime. However, Bradley (10-6-2, 3-2-1 MVC) goalkeeper Brian Billings made 11 saves on the afternoon, including six in the second half.
BU took control early in the match and kept the ball in the UE half of the field for much of the first 35 minutes of the contest and created the first prime scoring chance just over five minutes in. Bradley played a long bass into Evansville's defense third but, junior
Kevin Schafer was able to run shoulder-to-shoulder with a Bradley forward and thwart a breakaway attempt.
Sophomore
Vince DiPrimio nearly put a ball in the back of the net in the 10th minute, as he collected a failed clearance following a UE corner kick at the left corner of the box and floated a shot to the back post that was pushed aside by a fully-extended Billings.
Bradley got on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute, when Aaron Birk made a run on the down the right sideline toward the near post and finished a pass from Johnny Contreras from eight yards out by slotting the ball past
Eric Teppen and into the back corner of the net.
Evansville outshot Bradley, 7-6, in the first 45 minutes, but the Braves lead 1-0 at the break, as their tally came on their lone first-half shot on goal.
The Aces regrouped at halftime and nearly found the equalizer in the 62nd minute, but Gonzalez's shot from the top of the 18-yard box deflected off the outside of the left post and went out of bounds for a Bradley goal kick.
UE seized control of much of the possession throughout the final 20 minutes of regulation and created yet another scoring opportunity in the 85th minute. Junior
Dylan Terry weaved his way through the Braves' defense to create a 1-v-1 chance, but Billings stood firm and made a strong challenge to end the threat.
Evansville finally broke through in the 88th minute on Gonzalez's goal, as he was able to take advantage of a loose ball that came free at the back post with a sliding shot into an open net.
The score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes of play and the match proceeded to overtime, where Bradley got the golden goal from Badat in the second extra period. Following a foul by the Aces, the Braves reset quickly, as Christian Okeke was able to send a long pass over the UE defense to the feet of Badat. Badat then simply chipped the ball over a charging Teppen for the game-winner.
Terry led Evansville's offense with six shots, including three on goal, while sophomore Faik Hajderovic and Gonzalez tallied five apiece. Teppen finished the day with four saves in goal.
The Aces will open the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Wednesday, Nov. 13, where they will meet Bradley in a quarterfinal match in Peoria, Ill.
