UE Men Take Fourth At Benbow Invitational

JACKSONVILLE –
Freshman Alex Turner posted a 1-under 70 to finish just a stroke off the win as the Purple Aces men’s golf squad took fourth place at the Benbow Invitational.
 
Following a stellar round of 72 on Monday, Evansville native Alex Turner improved by two shots to finish with a 70, the top round for a UE player this season.  His two-day score of 142 put him in third place, one shot off of Ryan Fricker (Bethune-Cookman) and Andrew Bailey (Cleveland State).  Fricker took medalist honors following a playoff.
 
Junior Quinn Vilneff registered a top ten finish as his total of 147 was good enough for a tenth-place tie.  He carded a 74 on Tuesday. 
 
Another freshman, Rick Voyvodic, finished just outside the top 20 as his 151 put him in a tie for 25thParker Hensley and Will Knights each registered a 153 en route to a 34th place tie.
 
Three Aces entered the tournament as individuals, led by #A.J. Naas#.  He finished with a 164, a total that included the best round of his UE career on Tuesday, an 81.  Craig Niemeier was two shots behind with a 166 while Josiah Ashba finished the event with a 170.
 
Florida Atlantic held on to take team honors, notching a 582.  On Monday, FAU posted a 289 before shooting a 293 on Tuesday.  They finished four shots in front of Bethune-Cookman.  Northern Kentucky took third with a 591 as the Aces took fourth on the strength of a 592.  Cleveland State rounded out the top five with a 595.
 
Action continues on Monday as UE will travel to Serierville Golf Club in Tennessee for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.  Hosted by Tennessee Tech, the event will be on Monday and Tuesday.
