Aces Softball Splits Against Bowling Green State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville softball team split in its home opener in a doubleheader against Bowling Green State. The Aces picked up game one with a 3-2 win before falling to the Falcons in extra innings, 7-6.
 
The Aces racked up 15 hits and nine RBI’s on the day, with freshman #Kirsten O’Conner# leading the offense with three RBI’s and three hits out of her six appearances at the plate.
 
Evansville will play host on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10, when they play teams Murray State and Southeast Missouri State in their own tournament. The Aces are set to play SEMO at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Cooper Stadium before they finish the day against Murray State at 4:30 p.m.
 
Game 1: Bowling Green State: 2, UE 3
Bowling Green scored first in the top of the third with a single to right field and a pair of stolen bases that put the Falcons up, 2-0, over the Aces.
 
Evansville was quick to answer back in the third frame with a double made by senior Brianna Villanueva and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Victoria Dellorto to set the score at 2-1. A single by O’Conner brought in sophomore Kayla Fortner and senior Tamara Robey to home plate and allowed the Aces to take the lead, 3-2, and the victory after a scoreless, fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.
 
Evansville pitcher Sarah Patterson took the win for the Aces, pitching a complete game while striking out eight and allowing two runs. Patterson is now 2-3 on the season.
 
Jamie Kertes suffered the loss for the Falcons with 3.1 innings pitched while allowing three runs and striking out one. Relief pitcher Paris Imholz saw 2.2 innings for Bowling Green while striking out three.
 
Game 2: Bowling Green State: 7, UE 6
The Falcons struck quick in the first inning after a single to right field put them up, 1-0, over the Aces.
 
Evansville was able to get their offense going in the first as well after a double by Fortner tallied the score, 2-1, with the Aces in the lead.
 
Bowling Green tied it up in the top of the third with a single to center field, making it a 2-2 game. The Aces sure enough answered back in the bottom of the third with a single by senior Kendall Kautz and a double by O’Conner, tallying the score with an Aces lead, 4-2.
 
The Falcons were able to respond in the top of the sixth with a home run, taking a 5-4 lead over Evansville. Kautz was able to tie the score once again after a double allowed Fortner to advance to home plate, making it a 5-5 game.
 
Bowling Green got its offense going in the top of the ninth after a home run allowed a two run score with the Falcons taking a 7-5 lead.
 
The Aces fought hard in the bottom of the ninth with a ground out by Dellorto that allowed a single run score, making it 7-6. Evansville fell short though after a ground out to third base ended the inning and the game, allowing Bowling Green State to take the victory, 7-6.
 
Evansville relief pitcher Sarah Baldwin suffered the loss for the Aces after pitching 3.0 innings and striking out three, making her 0-2 on the season. Junior Taylor Perry saw action with 5.1 innings pitched from the start, striking out four and allowing four runs.
 
Bowling Green pitcher Jamie Kertes took the win for the Falcons, pitching 2.1 innings while striking out two and not allowing any runs.
