Women’s Golf Opens Season At Redbird Invitational

9/6/2013 9:57:00 AM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's golf team opens up the 2013 fall season with a trip to the Redbird Invitational, which will take place at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. on Sunday and Monday.

Play begins on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with 36 holes of play before wrapping up with 18 holes at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

In what will be a great measuring stick for the Purple Aces, the tournament features five Missouri Valley Conference teams.  Bradley, Drake, Illinois State and Southern Illinois are the other Valley schools participating.  Others playing include: Ball State, Bowling Green, Illinois Wesleyan, Oakland, Ohio U., Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Toledo and Western Illinois.

The Aces will be sporting a few new faces with freshmen Maggie Camp and Kayla Katterhenry are set to make their debuts.  Camp, a native of nearby Wadesville, Ind. and Katterhenry, who is from Newburgh, have both performed extremely well in preseason rounds and look to continue that success into the regular season.

Last season, it was then-freshman Paige Crafton posting the lowest average for the Aces.  Over the course of 24 rounds, Crafton averaged an 81.29 to lead teammate Cathy Doyle, who registered an 82.08.  Crafton's top effort of the season was a tie for 12th place at the Benbow Invitational in the spring opener earlier this year.

Doyle tied for third place last October as Evansville hosted the Braun Intercollegiate.  She followed that up with a tie for seventh place at the Benbow Invitational in the spring.

This year will mark the 48th version of the event, which has seen the host Redbirds dominate in recent year, taking three of the last four team championships.  Toledo ended the streak last year, posting a 3-round score of 915 to win the tournament.
