EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Conference-leading Illinois State kept its undefeated streak intact, taking a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team at the Carson Center on Friday night.
Evansville's (7-15, 3-7 MVC) duo of
Ashley Ring and
Genesis Miranda paced the offense combining for 25 kills. Ring led the way with 13 while Miranda finished the evening with 12. Leading the way for the Redbirds (16-5, 10-0 MVC) was Ashley Rosch. She totaled 12 kills while Kaitlyn Early led everyone with 38 assists. Defensively, it was Emily Orrick tallying 17 digs.
Illinois State took control early in the opening set and cruised to a 25-15 win. Led by a pair of Jaelyn Keene kills, the Redbirds jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Ashley Ring ended the stretch with a kill before ISU scored three more to go up 8-2. The largest advantage for Illinois State was 10 at the final 25-15. Illinois State outhit UE by a .552-.161 span in the game.
Evansville fared better early in the second frame despite falling behind by a 7-4 score. The Aces used two Ring kills to knot the score up at 8-8. UE looked to have momentum on its side, but the Redbirds reeled off the next seven points to retake control. Orrick did the serving for ISU during the run and notched an ace.
From there, ISU cruised to another 25-15 triumph.
Ring notched six kills in the third set as the Aces laid it all on the line in hopes of fighting their way back. For the third game in a row, UE scored the opening point before Illinois State scored five in a row. Their lead grew to five points at 11-6 before the Aces got right back into it. Ring recorded two kills while
Lillian Rosa had an ace to get UE within one at 12-11.
Later, it was Cathy Schreiber getting the job done. Her kill made it a 14-14 game. Evansville kept it close down the stretch, getting within one at 22-21, but ISU forced three UE errors to clinch the 25-21 win.
On Saturday night, Evansville will take on Indiana State at the Carson Center. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
