EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Ashley Ring led all players with 18 kills as the University of Evansville volleyball team fell to Drake by a 3-0 final at the Carson Center on Friday evening.
Ring totaled 18 kills in 59 attempts to lead all players. Next up was Genesis Miranda, who notched eight kills for the Purple Aces (8-18, 4-10 MVC). Meaghan Holmes posted seven kills and a block. She hit a team-best .333 on the night. Lorena Marquez finished with a match-high 29 assists.
Pacing Drake (10-14, 2-11 MVC) was Kyla Inderski, who registered 11 kills. Defensively, Michelle Thommi had 18 digs.
Drake opened up a 10-4 lead in the opening stanza and never looked back. Early on, Genesis Miranda gave the Aces a 2-1 lead, but Drake battled back. With the score knotted at 4-4, the Bulldogs reeled off six in a row.
Their biggest lead in the set was the final of ten points at 25-15. Makena Schoene, who had five kills in the set, finished it off for the Bulldogs. Ashley Ring posted a solid effort with seven kills in the set, but Drake's .351 hitting as a team was too much for UE to overcome.
In the second set, it was the Bulldogs coming out strong once again, going up 7-3 as Kyla Inderski had back-to-back kills. Their lead quickly grew to six tallies at 11-5 as the Aces committed errors in three out of four points.
From there, the Bulldogs built on their advantage as three Nicole Woods kills in a row saw them take a 23-11 lead before UE closed late to make it a 25-16 final. Ring had five kills in the game while Miranda checked in with four.
Game three looked like it would be déjà vu as Drake took the early advantage once again, taking a 7-4 lead on a Rebecca Brown service ace. Down by that margin, UE made a run, posting the next three on back-to-back Ring kills to knot it up at 7-7.
The game-changing rally for Drake came with the score tied at 10-10. A Woods kill saw them reel off four points in a row and they would not give up the lead from there, taking a 25-21 win. Evansville did its best to get back into it. Down 21-15, UE scored five in a row with Miranda recording two service aces, but another Woods kills put the finishing touch on the night.
Tomorrow, UE takes on UNI at the Carson Center with the start time set for 6 p.m. The final home match of the season is set for Nov. 21 as the Aces play Southern Illinois.
