EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Despite being down several players, the University of Evansville volleyball team put up a valiant effort in a 3-0 loss against one of the top teams in the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday night.
Â
The University of Evansville (8-19, 3-11 MVC) played Saturday's match down five player, almost 1/3 of the team, but was able to remain in the hunt versus the Panthers, who improved to 17-9 overall and 11-3 in the league.
Â
Ashley Ring led all players with 12 kills in her 47 attempts. Next up for the Aces was Stephanie Cerino, who tallied six. In her first action as the primary setter for UE due to injury, Genesis Miranda had 20 assists. Defensively, Ring and Tathianna Cordero had eight digs. With so many players being forced into new positions, it was a night of adjustment for UE.
Â
Leading UNI were Kayla Haneline and Eryca Hingtgen, who registered nine kills each. The Panthers hit a stellar .367 as Kinsey Caldwell checked in at .571.
Â
UNI scooted out to a 5-1 edge in the opening set and never looked back, earning a 25-12 win. The shorthanded Aces did their best to hang in as Ashley Ring had three kills and Stephanie Cerino had two. Even more impressive was the performance of Genesis Miranda. Playing as the setter due to injuries, she had six assists in the game.
Â
Evansville played better in the second frame, taking an early 2-0 lead as Tathianna Cordero posted a service ace. The Panthers came back with six of the next seven to take their first edge at 6-4. With UNI up 12-7, they reeled off the next five to put the set out of reach at 17-7. They finished with a 25-14 triumph.
Â
UE played its best set in the third, taking another early 1-0 lead. The Panthers scored three in a row to retake the lead before UE fought back. A Ring kill helped the Aces tie it up. Two more ties led to a 6-6 score as UNI would record the next five en route to an 11-6 lead.
Â
Down five, the Aces were able to keep the deficit in that vicinity until the final tallies. With UNI up 20-14, they were able to post the final five of the night to seal the match.
Â
The Aces make their final road trip of the season next weekend. They trek to Wichita State for a 5 p.m. match on Friday before heading to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State on Saturday at 7. On Nov. 21, UE plays its final home contest of the season against Southern Illinois. Seniors Ashley Ring and Meaghan Holmes will be honored prior to the game.
