LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Evansville women's basketball team (5-6) was defeated by the #7 Louisville Cardinals 73-51 on Monday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
Guard
Sara Dickey led all players with 14 points. Forward
Peyton Langston also scored a career-high eight points off the bench.
With a crowd of 7,909 on hand, Louisville leapt out to a 13-0 lead. Forward Sara Hammond and guard Bria Smith both scored four points each during the stretch that put the Aces down by double digits. UE would rally back by tallying the next nine consecutive points. Dickey scored the first seven points of the run as forward
Mallory Ladd added a jumper to pull the Aces within four points.
Narrowly ahead 13-9, Louisville would go on another surge. With Ladd and forward
Sasha Robinson both picking up their second fouls, the Cardinals scored 16 of the next 21 points and took a 41-20 edge at halftime.
Dickey netted 10 points before halftime for UE. Evansville shot 36.4% in the opening half but committed 14 turnovers.
The Aces responded in the second half by scoring the first five points after the break. Guard
Kenyia Johnson made a lay-up on the opening possession and Ladd hit a three on the next to cut the deficit to 41-26.
Louisville rebuilt the lead to 20 points with another rally only to see Evansville push the difference down to 12. Trailing 49-29, guard
Khristian Hart fueled a 10-2 run with seven consecutive points for the Purple Aces.
Ahead 51-39, the Cardinals scored the next six points as Evansville then rallied back with the six straight points again. Guards
Kat Taylor and
Laura Friday connected on back to back threes as Evansville trailed 59-47 with 8:38 left in regulation.
Louisville then pulled away late, ending the game on a 14-4 run for the victory.
The Cardinals won the rebounding edge 45-26 on the night. UE scored 25 points off the bench including eight from both Hart and Langston. Ladd scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
Evansville will now begin their Missouri Valley Conference schedule on Friday, January 2, 2015 when they visit the Missouri State Lady Bears. The game will be held at JQH Arena in Springfield, Missouri and begin at 7:05 p.m. CT.
