Box Score SOUTHAVEN, Miss. –The University of Evansville softball team finished off the Blues City Classic on a strong note, winning its final game of the tournament over Appalachian State, 5-2.
Megan Gurski led the way for the Purple Aces this afternoon, pitching 5.0 innings, while getting the win for UE, and also having three hits to lead Evansville on the day.
Coach
Mark Redburn was very pleased with how his team performed:
"I'm really happy with how the team turned it around this weekend, we got off to a bit of a slow start on day one, but our girls stuck with the plan and just kept playing and working.
We ended up plus .500 on the weekend here and that's all you can ask."
"Megan (Gurski) had a really good day for us, coming in for relief for
Emily Morris, who also had a really good weekend pitching, and getting the win for us, along with three hits. This was a great way to end the weekend on a strong positive note finishing it off with three wins in a row, especially going into our home tournament next weekend."
UE finished off the weekend winning three games in a row to bring them to 5-4 this season. Evansville's offense led the way this afternoon and was helped by some great pitching by junior Megan Gurski (2-2) and some very strong defense from the team as a whole.
After a scoreless first inning, Evansville's offense took over in the top of the second, scoring four runs.
Gurski started it out for UE by hitting a single to left center, followed by back to back walks for
Susan Norris and Kirsten O'Conner.
Michal Luckett stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and singled to left driving in Gurski in the process. Freshman
Chandra Parr hit a single to left field which plated two more runs for the Aces. Luckett scored on a wild pitch, putting Evansville up 4-0.
The Mountaineers scored two runs in the bottom of the second to make the score, 4-2. Gurski would come in for Morris in the top of the third and held the Mountaineers scoreless for the rest of the game. Gurski finished with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
UE would add one more run in the top of the sixth with an unearned run by
Briana Combs and that would be the ball game.
The Aces will host the Evansville Invitational next weekend from March 1-2, at Cooper Stadium. UE's first game will be against Northern Illinois at 12:30 p.m.
