JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior
Quinn Vilneff carded a team-low 70 as the Purple Aces men's golf team was victorious in the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Evansville improved on its tournament-leading score in day two. After shooting a 293 on Monday, the Aces came back with a 288 on Tuesday, tying for the lowest round of the event.
Sophomore
Alex Turner finished in third place overall to lead UE. Following a 72 in the first round, Turner posted an even 71 to finish with a 143. One stroke behind him was Quinn Vilneff, who finished with a 144. Tuesday's round saw Vilneff finish with a 1-under 70 to finish in fourth place.
Another sophomore,
Will Knights, also finished in the top ten. He posted a 72 on Tuesday en route to a 146 for the tournament.
Parker Hensley completed the event with a 148 and was followed by
Rick Voyvodic, who totaled a 161.
Jon Pick played on his own, posting a solid 155 in his two rounds of play.
The Aces held off Florida Atlantic by three strokes to take the team championship. Evansville held a 3-shot lead over the Owls after Monday before each finished with a 288 on Tuesday as UE took a 581-584 decision. Cleveland State took third place with a 591.
Caleb Sibley of FAU was the top individual, carding a 2-round score of 141. He defeated Jose Pa Sequrola of IUPUI by a stroke.
Next up for the Aces is a trip to Sevierville, Tenn. for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. Sevierville Golf Club will play host to the event on March 17 and 18.
