Camp Posts Low Round At Benbow Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Freshman Maggie Camp posted the low score of the day for her squad as the University of Evansville women's golf team finished in ninth place in the spring-opening Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.
 
Camp carded an 84 in the second and final round on her way to a tie for 34th place overall.  She posted a 175, improving her efforts by seven strokes in the final round.
 
Leading the team overall was another frosh and area native, Kayla Katterhenry.  She tied for 23rd with her score of 169.  Katterhenry posted an 82 on Monday before carding an 87.  Paige Crafton was next in line for the Purple Aces.  The sophomore tied for 31st with a 173 with rounds of 87 and 86, respectively.
 
Tying for 58th was Dana Hayden.  She followed up Monday's 98 with a round of 97 on Tuesday.  Sydney Skiles played as an individual as she tied Camp for 34th with a 175.  Her rounds finished at 87 and 88.
 
Newberry College overcame a deficit of seven strokes en route to the victory.  Newberry trailed Cleveland State, 326-333, following Monday's round but came out firing on Tuesday, posting a tournament-low 316.  Four Newberry players finished in the top 17.
 
Cleveland State took second-place honors.  Despite shooting two strokes lower on Tuesday (324), the Vikings fell one shot short of Newberry, who posted a 2-round total of 649.  Alabama State took third with a 655.  Evansville finished in ninth with a 712.
 
Medalist for the tournament was Ana Fernandez de Mes of IUPUI.  She shot an event-low 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 149.  She finished the event two strokes ahead of Dismary Marquez from Alabama State, who posted rounds of 76 and 75 to finish with a 151.
 
Next up for the Aces is a trip to Sevierville, Tenn. for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.  Sevierville Golf Club will play host to the event on March 17 and 18.
