Day One Results
NORMAL, Ill. – Reigning Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year
Kayla Katterhenry picked up right where she left off from last season as she completed the opening day of the Redbird Invitational tied for fifth place.
In the opening round of action on Sunday, Katterhenry finished with a 6-over 78. After a quick regroup between rounds, she returned to form, circling the course in an even 72 strokes on her way to a 150. She goes into Monday's final round of 18 in a tie for 5
th place, five shots off the lead.
Behind her was senior
Cathy Doyle. Following an 80 in the first round, Doyle improved by five strokes, shooting a 75 to finish the day with a 155. She stands in a tie for 26
th at +11. Another sophomore –
Maggie Camp – rounded out the top three for the University of Evansville. Camp carded an 81 in the opening tour of 18 before firing an 84 to finish at 165. She is tied for 74
th.
Rounding out Evansville's contingent in the event were
Dana Hayden and
Kelly Lamarche. Hayden finished Sunday with a 177 while Lamarche checked in with a 187. Playing as an individual, freshman Giulia Mallmann posted rounds of 89 and 83 on her way to a 172.
As a team, the Purple Aces stand in a tie with Marshall University in 14
th place. Both squads completed the first two rounds with a 642. Evansville is within shouting distance of the top ten, currently eight shots behind MVC rival Drake, who stands at 634.
Leading the way for the individuals is Maggie Ambrose of Illinois State. Playing as an individual, Ambrose registered rounds of 73 and 72, which put her atop the leaderboard at a 1-over 145. Fellow Redbird Brianna Cooper is in second place. She is one shot off the lead with a 146. Lena Gautier of Northern Illinois is in third with a 147.
The Huskies of NIU are comfortably in front on the team side. Northern Illinois posted the low round of the event in the second trip on Sunday, finishing with a 296. They lead Illinois State by seven strokes. Ball State sits in third, ten shots behind while Butler and Ohio U. round out the top five.
On Monday, the teams will play one more round of 18 to complete the event.
