EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville volleyball team welcomes a pair of Missouri Valley Conference teams to the Carson Center this weekend as the Purple Aces will face off against UNI and Drake.
Evansville takes on the Panthers at 6 p.m. on Friday before welcoming the Bulldogs to the Carson Center in a 6 p.m. tilt on Saturday. The Aces have gotten off to a tough start in league play as they sit at 1-7 overall. This weekend's opponents are amidst a fight for position in the middle of the Valley. UNI is tied for second with a 6-3 mark while the Bulldogs are in 7th place with a record of 4-5.
Purple Aces senior Stephanie Cerino had the top night of her career at Indiana State, registering a career-best 16 kills. It eclipsed her previous career mark of 15, which came against DePaul in September. Cerino hit an accurate .275 in the match, notching her 16 kills in 40 attempts against five errors. She also tallied six digs.
Sophomore Genesis Miranda hit .269 at Indiana State on Saturday. Through eight Missouri Valley Conference matches, Miranda has hit .200 or better. Last year, in 18 conference outings, Miranda accomplished the feat just four times.
Aces sophomore Genesis Miranda is ranks near the top of the NCAA in several key statistics. Below is a list of her NCAA ranks:
6th in the NCAA - 1,014 total attacks
7th in the NCAA - 417.0 points
12th in the NCAA - 12.07 attacks per set
14th in the NCAA - 355 total kills
18th in the NCAA - 4.96 points per set
30th in the NCAA - 4.23 kills per set
The Aces and Panthers tangled in a great 5-set match in Cedar Falls earlier this season and the teams appear poised for another battle. UNI comes to the Carson Center with a 12-10 overall mark and are 6-3 in the MVC. Kayla Haneline ranks 5th in the MVC with 3.24 kills per set while setter Heather Hook is third with 10.45 assists per frame.
A solid turnaround has seen Drake begin Valley play at 4-5 while standing at an even 13-13 overall. The Bulldogs are 1-3 in their last four contests, falling by a 3-0 final last time out at Northern Iowa. Makena Schoene is the leader for the Drake offense as her 3.65 points per set is 7th in the conference.
