MVC Tournament Bid Up for Grabs as Aces Visit UCA

UE MATCH NOTES

CONWAY, Ark. –
A spot in the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament is up for grabs as the University of Evansville men's soccer team (2-12, 0-5 Missouri Valley Conference) visits the University of Central Arkansas (1-13-1, 0-4 MVC) on Saturday, Oct. 31. The match will be held at Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex and start at 2:00 p.m. CDT.
 
PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS
The winner of the contest will secure the sixth and final spot in the upcoming 2015 MVC Tournament as the loser will be eliminated from qualifying for the postseason event.
 
WHAT TO KNOW
  • This is the MVC regular season finale for Evansville
  • The Aces are looking to snap a season-high nine match losing streak
  • Senior forward Mark Anthony Gonzalez has 26 career goals, tied for ninth in program history
  • UE is 6-0-1 all-time against UCA including a 1-0-1 mark on the road.
  • The Aces are back home for Senior Night and a match with Northern Kentucky (Nov. 3)

THE OPPONENT
UCA enters this match on a four-game losing streak. The Bears are currently in a stretch of 13 consecutive matches without a win (12 losses, one tie). The lone win of the year for Central Arkansas was a 2-1 victory over Central Baptist College (Sept. 4). Wes Carson has a team-best six goals and 15 points. Daltyn Knutson leads the squad with three assists. Harrison Veith holds a 2.73 goals against average, has recorded 75 saves, and possesses a .647 saves percentage.
 
HISTORY
UE is 6-0-1 all-time against Central Arkansas including a 1-0-1 mark in Conway, Ark. The Purple Aces played to a scoreless tie at UCA (2011) before winning 1-0 at Central Arkansas (2013).

LAST MEETING
Evansville won 3-0 at home against UCA (Oct. 4, 2014). Mark Anthony Gonzalez, Landon Souder, and Charlie Macias all scored in the contest as goalkeeper Eric Teppen recorded four saves for the shutout.
 
LAST ROAD MEETING
The Aces won 1-0 at Central Arkansas (Oct. 26, 2013). Mark Anthony Gonzalez tallied the lone goal in the 26th minute. Eric Teppen made four saves for the shutout and victory.
 
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY
The Aces were cancelled on Tuesday, Oct. 28 when heavy rains and unplayable field conditions prevented UE from hosting Saint Louis.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Evansville was defeated 4-2 at home by Missouri State (Oct. 24). Senior forward Mark Anthony Gonzalez scored both UE goals, a 47th minute penalty kick conversion and another goal in the 87th minute.
 
MOVING ON UP
With two goals against Missouri State (Oct. 24), Mark Anthony Gonzalez is now tied with Rune Bjoro and Mike Luttrull for ninth most in program history (26). His next goal will tie Rob Schoenstein for eighth place in Purple Aces history.
 
WELL THAT'S A FIRST
Sophomore forward Desmond Dolphy scored his first goal of the season in the match at Lipscomb (Oct. 20). Other firsts in the match included the first career starts for sophomore defender Cameron Gilreath and freshman midfielder Tom Skupien.
 
LEADING OFF
Mark Anthony Gonzalez has a team-high six goals, and 14 points this season. Nine different Aces have combined for the 14 assists this year, including a team-best three from freshman forward Zac Blaydes. Sophomore midfielder/defender Ian McGrath leads UE with 34 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Greg Niven has the most saves on the roster (34) but sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Keller holds the lowest GAA (2.48).
 
REACHING A MILESTONE
The Saturday night game against Bradley (Oct. 10) was the 800th match in UE men's soccer history (425-311-63).
 
TOP TIER COMPETITION
Evansville has played two NSCAA ranked teams this season (#24 Bowling Green, #20 Kentucky) and two other teams that were featured in the NSCAA Poll at other points this season (#21 Butler, #10 Indiana).
 
UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Evansville's schedule features three NCAA Tournament teams from last year (Indiana, Kentucky, St. Louis). The Aces will take on two teams that finished in the final RPI top 25 last season (Indiana 16, St. Louis 22) and seven in the top 100 (Bowling Green 64, Butler 68, Missouri St. 76, Mercer 86, and Lipscomb 97).
 
WHAT AN HONOR
UE men's soccer player (1985-'87) Mick Lyon was announced as a 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Famer in August. In a homecoming on field ceremony, the press boxes at Arad McCutchan Stadium were named in honor of Lyon and longtime men's soccer coach Fred Schmalz. The 1985 Final Four team will also be inducted into the UE Hall of Fame in 2016.
 
IN THE CLASSROOM
UE men's soccer received an NSCAA College Team Academic Award (Sept. 23) for their 3.14 GPA in the 2014-15 academic year. This is their fourth straight year receiving the honor and ninth overall.
 
IAN ON NBC
For the second time this season, a goal from Ian McGrath has been featured on NBC Sports. His 22 yard game-winning blast vs. Belmont (Sept. 6) appeared on the NBC Sports Platforms this past week. McGrath's 35 yard strike against Mercer (Aug. 20) also appeared on NBC Sports during the exhibition season.
 
NUMBER ONE
The Aces have a new head coach this season, Marshall Ray, who claimed his first win as UE men's soccer coach in the team's 2-1 win over Belmont (Sept. 6). A former player (1995-'99) at Evansville, Ray graduated from UE in 2000 and has served on the staff for nine years with the last six as Associate Head Coach.
 
POSITIVE PRESEASON
The UE men's soccer team finished the preseason 2-1-0 including victories over Bellarmine and Mercer. Ian McGrath and freshman forward Mikey Matic each tallied two goals each.
 
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
Senior Night will take place Tuesday, Nov. 3 when UE plays host to Northern Kentucky. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT starts at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
