EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Last weekend, the University of Evansville women's golf team faced its fellow Missouri Valley Conference squads in the league championship. This week it is the guys turn as the men travel to Sunrise Beach, Mo. to play in the MVC Championship on Monday and Tuesday.
Two rounds will be played on Monday before the third and final trip around the 18 holes takes place on Tuesday. Par for the tournament is 72 while the yardage is 7,036. Last season, UE took sixth place in the tournament as Alex Turner came home in a tie for 10
th place with a 3-round total of 224.
Last time out for the Aces, a final-round score of 69 saw University of Evansville golfer Wil Pahud leap into a tie for 22nd as UE wrapped up the Hoosier Invitational.
Pahud shot one of the lowest rounds of the day as his 2-under 69 saw him finish the 3-round tournament with a 218 at the IU Golf Course. He was the top finisher for Evansville. Freshman Tyler Gray finished five strokes behind Pahud with a 223. He tied for 43rd. Following an opening-round 77, Gray carded two rounds of 73 to move up in the standings.
Third for Evansville was Alex Turner. A 1-over 72 on Sunday saw him finish the event with a 228 in what was a close field throughout the standings. Next up was Rick Voyvodic. He registered an 80 in the final trip to finish with a 230. Will Knights rounded out the squad, posting a final score of 234. His final round checked in at a 79.
Evansville finished its three rounds with an 890 to finish in 15th place, just one stroke ahead of Drake. The Aces were three behind Youngstown State's 887. Wisconsin led the way after day one and a 288 on Sunday saw the Badgers clinch the team championship. An 853 saw Wisconsin defeat Cincinnati by eight strokes. Indiana was third with an 867 with Oakland (871) and Toledo (872) rounding out the top five.
The Golf Club at Porto Cima is a Jack Nicklaus designed facility that opened in 2000. Over the last 14 years Porto Cima has hosted several Missouri Golf Association Championships, the annual Missouri Intercollegiate and the 2011 Men's MVC Championship. Recently Golf Digest recognized The Club at Porto Cima as the one of the best private golf courses in America.
