EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men's soccer team (2-1-0) was defeated 3-1 by IUPUI (1-0-1) in a home exhibition on Sunday night.
Freshman Mikey Matic tallied the lone goal for UE, who begins the regular season at Milwaukee on Friday, Aug. 28 before returning home for the ProRehab Aces Classic and Military Appreciation Night on Sept. 4.
"This match was good preparation for the regular season," said Evansville head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "It was a physical match and we lost our focus at times."
The teams played to a scoreless tie after 45 minutes. The first half featured 26 fouls (19 for IUPUI, seven by Evansville). There was only one shot on goal, a 39th minute blast from the right wing by sophomore forward Desmond Dolphy that was saved by goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes.
IUPUI broke the scoreless tie with goals in the 46th and 54th minutes.
Down 2-0, UE answered back with a 67th minute goal. Freshman midfielder Brian Hughes dribbled in and had a back pass to Matic for the blast from the top of the 18 yard box. The goal was the second this preseason for Matic and brought UE within one, 2-1.
Just 19 seconds later, IUPUI scored again to bring the lead back up to two.
"We worked hard to get ourselves back in the match at 1-2," said Ray, "but giving the third goal up straight off the kickoff did not help our cause."
Evansville was unable to score the remainder of the match in the 3-1 defeat.
IUPUI (28) and Evansville (14) combined for 42 fouls and three yellow cards (two for the Jaguars and one by UE). Sophomore midfielder Ian McGrath took a team-high four shots (one on goal) for the Aces. Matic also recorded three shots (two on goal).
Evansville's next match is at Milwaukee on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 p.m. CDT. UE is back at home on Friday, Sept. 4 for the opening round of the ProRehab Aces Classic. It is Military Appreciation Night with all current or retired military members receiving free admission. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
