BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Evansville men's soccer team (2-4-0) dropped a 3-0 road contest at Indiana University (4-3-1) on Wednesday evening. The Purple Aces return home for their Homecoming match and Missouri Valley Conference opener against Drake on Saturday, Sept. 26.
"We were under a little bit of pressure the first five to 10 minutes from IU, but we dealt with it, had some possessions at midfield and created some opportunities," said Evansville head men's soccer coach
Marshall Ray. "The second goal really hurt us and broke our back a bit but we regrouped at halftime. When you look at it, we gave up a penalty kick off a long throw and another off a set piece. We have to get better and focused in those situations and create a few more chances."
Indiana went ahead in the 8
th minute, taking advantage of a handball in the 18 yard box for a Femi Hollinger-Janzen penalty kick and score.
Hollinger-Janzen then netted another goal in the 40
th minute to put UE down by two entering halftime. The Aces tallied six shots in the opening half including two from sophomore midfielder/defender Ian McGrath (high in the 22
nd minute and wide left in the 30th minute).
Ahead 2-0, IU increased their lead on a 62
nd minute goal by Grant Lillard, the final score of the evening.
McGrath led UE with three shots in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper
Matthew Keller recorded three saves.
Homecoming is this weekend (Sept. 25-27) at UE. There will be a soccer doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 26 as the women's team hosts Loyola at 3:00 p.m. CDT and the men's team plays Drake at 6:00 p.m. The festivities include a Forever Purple Carnival, an Athletics Yard Sale, on field recognitions (Hall of Fame coaches Mick Lyon and Fred Schmalz, members of the 1985 and 1990 NCAA Final Four teams), and the first-ever fireworks extravaganza on the UE campus.
