Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Aces’ bid for top spot in the Valley falls short

EVANSVILLE – After a first half strike put the University of Evansville women's soccer team ahead on Sunday afternoon, the Purple Aces found themselves just seven minutes shy of claiming the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference with a game to go. However, visiting Illinois State had other plans, finding the net twice over the final minutes of regulation to pick up the 2-1 win at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

"It was a good match," UE head coach Krista McKendree said. "We had a game plan to limit their chances and try to prevent them from getting good looks at goal. I think we did that for the most part. They're opportunistic on the attack and very dangerous going forward, and they showed that today. We competed and battled today, but we weren't able to pull it off."

With the win, the Redbirds (11-5-2, 4-0-1 MVC) officially claimed the regular season MVC title and secured the top spot in next month's conference tournament.

Colleen Dierkes put the Aces (4-11-1, 3-2-0 MVC) on the board early as she pounced on a loose ball in the ISU 18-yard box and finished over goalkeeper Haley Smith in the 38th minute. It was the second goal of the season for the senior out of St. Louis and the first since netting the winner at Drake last month.

ISU would continue to attack over the course of the second 45 minutes, but the Aces were largely successful at snuffing out the chances until Brianne Richards capitalized on an opportunity in the box in the 84th minute. The deadlock wouldn't last long as Lauren Koehl notched her 14th goal of the season on an 89th-minute breakaway to seal the match.

The Aces, who have now completed their home schedule for the regular season, close out league play with a trip to Missouri State next Thursday.

NOTES: Bronwyn Boswell is two goals away from moving into a tie for seventh on UE's all-time scoring list … The Aces are 8-15-3 all-time against Illinois State … Last season, the Aces picked up a 2-1 overtime victory over the Redbirds in Normal … The win put an end to a four-match losing streak for the Aces against ISU … The Aces are 25-29-9 all-time against schools that hail from the state of Illinois … UE is 3-3-0 all-time on Oct. 23.
